Crown Jewels Mint Chocolate Truffles

The Crown Jewels brand has been perfecting the truffle since 1992, and the company assembles chocolate-covered mint, cherry, orange, raspberry, creamy caramel candies and more out of its Salt Lake City, Utah manufacturer. With eight pieces in a box and each one individually wrapped, Crown Jewels Mint Chocolate Truffles are, as the box says, delicious. Each rectangular truffle is about half the size of your normal “fun size??? candy bar. But unlike your run-of-the-mill candy bar, this chocolate really has a sophisticated, gourmet taste. I bit into my first Crown Jewels truffle loving the milk chocolate outside but adoring the creamy, cool taste of melt-away mint chocolate cream inside. I’d compare it to the types of candy you get in a heart-shaped box on Valentine’s Day. You want to eat them all at once, but you hate the thought of finishing the box so much that you always save some for later. And eating the last filled candy is the most painful, because then it’s all over.

I think it’s appropriate to eat this candy in several bites to get the most out of it, but you can down the whole thing in one bite if you’d rather. Whatever you do, just try these. They are, as the brand states, crown jewels, and a cut above the competition. The only thing I disagree with is the company’s on-the-box claim that the chocolates are “individually wrapped in beautiful foil.??? Whether or not that’s important, I’d have to say that there is nothing beautiful about the foil wrapping on these truffles. In fact, the mint green wrappers are quite plain, without any design or even a brand name on the packaging. (Some of Crown Jewels products do have the name—it just depends on what type of box you buy.) Pretty nondescript, but these make great basket fillers or stocking stuffers. It’s a good thing we all learned not to judge a book by its cover or a candy by its outer shell. You don’t want to miss out on this sensational sweet treat in the chocolate truffle industry.

Myntz! Vanillamynt Blast

I’ve never had a Myntz! before. I’ve seen them in the store, but I’ve just never had the urge to try one with all of the other breath mints on the market with proven reputations. But now I see what I’ve been missing out on. These breath mint candies are bold and refreshing in a way that other mints are not. The flavor I tried was Vanillamynt Blast, which was a different taste, to say the least. I don’t think I’ve ever had a mint or candy that was vanilla-flavored, but now I think more companies should try it. It was odd at first, but the first few seconds, I enjoyed the rest of the time it was in my mouth. One of the good things about these is that they dissolve quickly, but you still feel the breath freshening effects and the taste for hours afterwards. The quick dissolve is why there website boasts “Teeth Optional??? as a selling point to their product. Another attractive quality of the Myntz! is that they come in a handy little tin – called the Thinnie Tinnie –  for carrying convenience and to keep in the freshness.

Myntz! have been manufactured by the Vitech Company since 1996. The odd thing about this is that the Vitech Company specialized in vitamins and nutritional supplements since 1988 and it was a leader in the vitamin industry. In 1996, however, they decided to bring their expertise to the breath mint industry and created an upscale healthy sugar-free mint for consumers. But not only are they sugar-free, but they also contain no aspartame, gluten, and very few carbs for the health conscious breath mint lover. These mints also help to neutralize the acid in your mouth so they are good for your teeth, unlike many other popular breath mints on the market today. The Vitech Company produces several other flavors of Myntz!, including Peppermynt, Orchard Blend, and SuperSourz Tropical Fruit along with a new Instastrip product named Cynnamon. For added health advantages, they also produce a green tea that contains Ginseng. So as you can see, Myntz! are not only tasty, fun, and convenient, but they also give great health benefits. It is quite obvious that the Vitech Company has transferred their knowledge in vitamins to the breath mint arena to create one of the most popular brands of breath mints on the market.

Annabelle’s Rocky Road

I bit into this piece of candy not knowing what to expect. I’d never heard of the Annabelle’s candy company before trying their most popular Rocky Road variety. I was hesitant about the first bite because I’m not a big fan of marshmallow, which is what the center is entirely made of. But I was pleasantly surprised. Annabelle’s Rocky Road is a chocolate covered marshmallow treat with cashews on the inside, although I didn’t notice any in my piece. That’s just as well, though, because the minty green marshmallow was enough to get me hooked. There’s just something about the combination of chocolate, mint and marshmallow that I couldn’t resist. It was a very soft chew which is something that I’m always looking for with my candy. I don’t really like crunchy treats or candy that crunches too much, so the marshmallow was just an added bonus to the minty chocolate taste. And with only 45 calories and 2 grams of fat per piece, I think I’m going to the store today to buy a few more.

After eating this, I wanted to find out more about the company to see what other treats they make. The Annabelle Candy Company has actually been around for a long time. A Russian immigrant who wanted to make some of the best candy that the country had seen started it. The company took off in 1950 from San Francisco and was named after the immigrant’s daughter, Annabelle. When he died in 1971, the control of the company was to Annabelle. Currently, her children run the company and it is one of the largest independently owned candy manufacturers in the country.

What’s even better than that? The candy made by Annabelle’s Candy Company continues to be made by hand. What company still does that? You can be sure that your Annabelle’s candy is made with quality products and each piece is handled carefully. It’s almost like each piece was created just for you. Since the company’s beginning, they have also added other flavors and creations, all involving the best chocolate products and treats that are sure to please any candy-lover’s taste buds.

Tic Tac Lime

Who’s not a fan of Tic-Tacs? Tic-Tacs are the signature breath freshening candy with the recognizable rattle that everybody is familiar with. As popular as it is, though, Tic-Tacs aren’t the best idea for church or funerals because of their noisy nature. I tried the lime flavored Tic-Tacs, which I’ve never tried before. I was pleasantly surprised. I’m normally not a huge lime flavor lover, but after putting one of these in my mouth, I immediately put another handful in to follow it. I think that’s the best way to enjoy Tic-Tacs. Sure, you can do one or two at a time, but you don’t get the full flavor explosion that you would get by putting half of the box in your mouth at one time. For an even bigger taste experience, you can put all 37 little pieces in your mouth at the same time, but the only problem is that they don’t last as long if you do it that way. But it’s well worth it.

These pill-like breath fresheners have been one of the leading breath candies on the market for a number of years. I can see why. They are very addicting and refreshing at the same time. One of the things that has made Tic-Tacs popular is their many tasty flavors that they have introduced. Their website says that they have flavors that will match any mood or outfit so you can use Tic-Tacs as an accessory to your clothing. Although it’s meant as a joke, it contains some truth to it. The bold, vivid colors for each flavor are sure to match any wardrobe. The Lime ones that I tried are a bold lime green color. Other flavors include Cinnamon (an electrifying red color), Spearmint (a pure white color), and Orange (you guessed it, a vibrant orange color), among many others. The company is constantly adding new bold flavors, too.

Tic-Tac’s website is almost as much fun as the candy itself. It has a little quiz you can take to determine your Tic-Tac “type.??? You will also find links to Tic-Tac related art along with computer arcade games with a Tic-Tac theme. Other links showcase the various Tic-Tac advertising campaigns from past years and current campaigns as well as a list of popular culture references that have included Tic-Tacs. Their website is dedicated to fully saturating the visitors with Tic-Tac related stuff.

Dilbert Mints

Ragold has a proven record of creating and distributing some of the best tasting mint products on the market. This new line of mints is no exception. Although the mints are tasty and refreshing, the best part about them isn’t the mints, but it’s the container that the mints are packaged in. Ragold produced a whole line of their popular mints but they used a smart marketing strategy by putting them in tins with Dilbert comic strips on the front. As a big fan of Dilbert, these mints got my attention right away, which is probably what the company was hoping for. Ragold produced several different Dilbert scenes, each one with a different theme related to the office work environment. Other than the Pay-mints version that I tried, the company also has Accomplish-mints, Manage-mints, Improve-mints, and Perfor-mints, among others. For huge Dilbert fans, the tins might be a collectible. What’s even better is that once you open the lid of the tin, there is a Dilbert comic strip on the inside of the lid. Other than the attractive packaging for these Ragold breath refreshers, the mints on the inside are even shaped like tiny Dilbert characters from the popular comic strip.

Ragold’s line of Dilbert mints can serve a variety of purposes. For instance, you can leave an open tin of these mints on your desk for people walking by. If you’re worried about your own bad breath, you can start your day off with a few mints and then use a few more after lunch to avoid that dreaded food or garlic breath. You can have spaghetti and garlic bread for lunch and then Ragold’s Pay-mints will help to freshen your breath afterwards. Be assured that the description on the tin – Peppermint Intense – is no exaggeration or embellishment. These mints are strong so you know it’s doing what it’s supposed to be doing. On top of that, these are also great conversation pieces with the comic strip and the little character-shaped mints on the inside. Buy these mints by the case for a month’s supply or to pass out to others. With only 2.5 calories per mint, you can be sure to enjoy the breath freshening qualities and tastiness throughout the day.

Myntz!

I’m guessing these are the older brother to the aforementioned Sqyntz! Now it’s got the same psychedelic tin cover. Just with less colors and no tie-dye. It’s more of an acid nightmare one might have experienced in the early 60’s. However they contain the same “Low Carb??? label that was on the Sqyntz!. There is unfortunately no Vitamin C label on the tin. Which does in a way make me a little sad. I was hoping for a little vitamins with my Wintermynt Blast. But lets give these guys the same attention we gave to the Sqyntz!. Let’s not do the injustice of judging a book by its cover. These guys could be better than the other. These guys could possess some super human strength in them. Like Popeye and his spinach. This could very well be your spinach. But you’d never know because you were to busy judging the tin, as I was. And I put myself in that category of judging before trying too, so don’t you go pointing fingers I call it like I see it! I know I have committed the same crime as you. And frankly I’m okay with that. I can live with myself simply because I know I am about to judge by it’s contents. I have the tin in front of me and ready to consume the minty freshness that awaits.

Upon opening the tin I am hit with a different smell. And a different strength. These little guys sure have a kick behind them. I wasn’t expecting such a powerful scent. Alright now let me say these guys are way better than their younger sibling. These guys have quite the power behind them I had smelled when I opened up the tin. They pack a real punch of minty freshness that is almost making my eyes water. Wow I have never been this pleasantly surprised as I am with these Myntz. Alright while I’m off getting tissue for my tears of joy break open a case of these and make sure you take my words as caution. Be careful when you underestimate the opponent. They might come at you like a Mint Breath mint. Full of powerful freshness that means business.

Sqyntz!

SO the name on the tin says, Sqyntz!. I’m wondering if they mean what they say. Do they mean Sqyntz as in you will squint from it being so “Super Sour???. Or do they mean you are going to make the squinting sound because they are that good. One can only hope none of these are going to happen. Sqyntz Super Sours look like something out of the 70’s. The psychedelic tin with tie-dye swirls only makes one wonder what lies within. Now it says it is “Low Carb??? which is good, because I’m trying to watch my girlish figure after all that holiday food and candy. It also says it has Vitamin C, which is also good because, Vitamin C is good. And good for you. Never underestimate the power of your vitamins kids. Upon opening the tin I am hit with the familiar smell of tart sour fruity goodness. But hidden underneath that is a distinct smell of something else. It could only be that Vitamin C they had told me about on the cover. So with that in mind I further inspect the tin and find that there are three colors awaiting me. And which to try first. The Green, Orange or Purple?

Now I am no stranger to flavor. The Green has got to be Sour Apple. The Orange, well Orange right? I mean how many other flavors could be Orange. And last but not least Purple, it has to be Grape. So here we go. Not as sour as other candies I have had before but you can definitely taste the vitamin C. Now I don’t know if the sugar and the Vitamins are supposed to be mixed like this I can tell you it is pretty darn good my friends! I wasn’t expecting this at all. I have to tell you this is quite the surprise. These babies are actually quite good. I think out of the three. My favorite has to be the Green. Sour Apple more than likely. Over all these guys weren‘t as psychedelic and super sour as they had originally disclaimed in the outset, but I do give high marks for taste and flavor. These might have a tough time competing against other more well known sour treats but I believe they have an edge others do not. And that‘s the Vitamin C.

You get close on the dance floor and all sweaty. So you decide to slow things down by taking a little stroll through the park. Holding hands and walking close to one another. This is where the night should be going. (Take notes if you are no good at this, this is god stuff I’m giving you here). So it’s time to go back home and call it a night. You get to the front door and ask them to come inside. This is where you put on the moves. Dim the lights. Light a candle. Spread the rose petals on the bed. It’s that time for the After part. Ragold Sugar Free Cinnamon Mints

If you like a hot, fiery cinnamon flavor (much like Red Hots candies), you’ll love Ragold Cinnamon Mints. A 1.5 oz. rectangular tin of these mints (which are each about the size of an Altoid) is both portable and practical. Let’s face it—we all run into occasions when our breath could use a little freshening, and it’s nice to switch it up from the normal peppermint or spearmint breath mint. What makes these mints stand out in the crowd is that they are all natural and sugar free. People who must steer clear of gluten products or artificial sweeteners can still eat these. Yes, because Ragold uses natural flavors, these mints are a great substitute for your normal, everyday mint.

Both spicy and refreshing (as is printed on the tin), Ragold Cinnamon mints are based off of an impressive recipe. With a long-lasting taste and no sugary residue leftover on the teeth, these mints give the feeling of actually cleaning your mouth. That’s a bold claim to make, perhaps, but I rarely eat mints if I know that they will leave a film or sugary coating after dissolving in my mouth. It’s just not always convenient to brush your teeth when you’re on the go, and so I really appreciate the fresh feeling these mints leave behind. Ragold Confections (most famous for their sugar-free Velamints) is doing some other exciting things in the mint industry—like making mints for golfers. Yes, their PGA Tour line features both peppermint and cinnamon sugar-free mints shaped like tiny golf balls (dimples included). They also come in a tin that’s shaped like a golf ball. Ragold’s Dilbert mints are also cleverly marketed products. They are shaped like the popular comic-strip characters (Dilbert, Dog-bert, Cat-bert) and the tins come labeled with such names as Appoint-mints, Pay-mints and Perform-mints. And so, it would be more than appropriate to say that Ragold’s corner on the sugar-free market is a huge Accomplish-mint.

Necco Mint Julep

Time for a little trivia. What does N.E.C.C.O. stand for? If you said New England Confectionery Company, you’re absolutely correct. Since 1847, this nostalgia-heavy company has been cranking out favorite candies like Necco wafers, Sweethearts (a.k.a. conversation hearts), Clark bars, Candy Buttons and Mary Janes. But not to be forgotten are Necco’s many other products, like the Mint Julep chew. These square-cut chewy candies come in bags or tubs and are typically sold near cash registers or in convenience stores for pocket change. A little larger than you might expect, they outsize fruit chews like Starburst or chewy caramels. Nostalgia, or retro candies as they are often called, have an enchantment about them that is irresistible. Candy has a way of taking us back to the good old days. Mint Julep is just another fine specimen in this realm of candy nostalgia, but it will always have a special place for some consumers. Its taffy counterpart, the Banana Split chew, is another one of Necco’s memory-inducing candies.

I opened the wrapper to my first Mint Julep to discover a square of lime-colored green taffy. Initially I bit off half, but then gave in and stuffed the entire piece into my mouth—a small feat for someone who normally only chews half a stick of gum (whole pieces interfere with normal talking and swallowing). But I enjoyed the Mint Julep chew quite a bit, with its cool yet mild spearmint flavor. My mind was tricked mid-consumption, and I began to wonder if I was chewing spearmint gum. Yet this was not so, and the taffy dissipated and was on its way to digestion station in about 30 seconds. Just as any good taffy should—after all, who wants to walk around with the same flavor of Taffy in their mouth all day? Exactly. But just like gum has its purpose, so does taffy. The Mint Julep is not quite a mint, and is definitely not gum, but it is a tasty old-time treat everyone should try at least once.
