Gimbal’s Jelly Beans

San Francisco–based candy company Gimbal’s was born in 1898. (Yes, that’s Gimbal’s, not gumballs.) Brothers Alexander, Louis and Eugene Gimbal Joined forces to cook up some of the greatest candy in town. In fact, they first made a name for themselves by using a steam-production process under the name “Pacific Steam Candy Factory.” Making penny candies and nickel candy bars, not much has changed outside of the price. They still have the old-fashioned goods, but also some innovative candies in the works.

Good thing for Gimbal’s, some candies never get old. Take jelly beans, for instance. These are not just a sweet treat for Easter baskets anymore, but are yummy any day of the year. Gimbal’s Jelly Beans are of the gourmet variety, and they come in 41 flavors like tiramisu, java, buttered popcorn, baja margarita, key lime, boysenberry, french vanilla, passion fruit, peach, chocolate, lemon meringue, blue Hawaiian, tutti frutti and hot cinnamon—and that’s not even half of them. You may be thinking that these sound a lot like the Jelly Belly flavors, and they are very similar. But there are some different ones—and besides, there’s no copyright on candy flavors. That would be so limiting! The Java is a standout flavor—tastes just like a cup of gourmet flavored coffee. Perfectly Pear is divine, and Orange ‘n Cream tastes just like a Dreamsicle. You might be knocked off your feet when you taste the Butted Popcorn jelly bean. It’s strikingly similar to a movie theater bucket of buttery goodness. Strawberry Daiquiri was a bit over the top in flavor, and tasted artificial. But each flavor is so much it’s own, that you have to taste them all (with a big gulp of water in between) to really make a judgment call. I love Gimbal’s Jelly Beans, and will most definitely be a repeat customer. You should satisfy your gourmet tastes with a bag of your own.

The Reese’s Legacy

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Don’t ever say Candy Direct didn’t give you the best candy with a bit of education to appreciate the fine work that goes into these treats. In 1922 H.B. Reese released the first Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. In 1963 Hershey’s Chocolate Company buys the H.B. Reese Candy Company. 7 years later, Hershey would double in size because the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup is that popular.

You know the name. You are familiar with its scent. You love the taste, and that’s what drives your taste buds crazy. It’s the old familiar smell of good times about to be had by all. It’s the joy of knowing you are about to eat something precious. It’s the excitement that you are about to consume the treat of treats that has every other candy wondering how they can become the next big thing. It’s the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. So powerful, and uncompromising in its attitude, it leaves you defeated after going round for round with this past time playboy. Encasing creamy peanut butter in a cup of chocolate, Reese’s give you what appears to be an early birthday cake.

Reese’s Pieces

Reese’s Pieces. Candy in a crunchy shell. They first hit the market in 1978 and made a quick impression on the chocolate candy industry. In fact Reese’s Pieces was so popular, it had a big screen debut as E.T.’s favorite candy. The idea is simple, take peanut butter, cover it in a hard chocolate shell and make it bite size. It’s not saturated with greasy peanut butter, it’s a smooth taste with a nice chocolate compliment. It’s giving all other bite size chocolate treats the stink eye. It wants to be different. It wants to be in your face. It wants to make a nice little home in your heart of hearts, by giving you the best of what chocolate and peanut butter can offer. It takes its time, leaving a lasting impression on your senses for decades to come.

Now, the sister candy to the original Reese’s Pieces is the Reese’s Pieces with Nuts. From exterior to interior we have the chocolate shell, followed by the peanut butter layer found in the original. But those is surrounding a peanut. Again a simple idea, just enhanced. But fret not you band wagon jumpers, there’s room for you yet. These little puppies kick it up a notch and say, “what’s the deal, we can’t come out and play? We just want a chance to prove ourselves in the chocolate world. Just because we’re different, that doesn’t make us wrong. And right they are! They stand next big brother with folded arms of enthusiasm.

In my opinion, Reese’s Pieces may be one of the best ideas for a snack candy. One of my favorite combinations being chocolate and peanut butter, they make it easy for travel on land, air and sea! These pieces of amazement, tantalize and mesmerize the uneducated candy consumer. This is the only type of its kind on the market and bests the challenger on every aspect of the peanut butter and chocolate collaboration. When it comes to Reese’s, they are the original peanut butter and chocolate candy. Do your self’s a favor, buy a bag, and take a minute to enjoy the company of an old friend.

Shock Tarts

It’s very hard to find good sour candy these days, but luckily for those who love both sour and sweet candy there is now a solution.  Shockers have this unique taste because at the first instant, when you put it in your mouth it tastes sour and shocking, but then it turns a little sweet. What I like to do is just suck on the candy until all the sour taste has died down, and then I chew on the remaining candy, which is deliciously sweet. They are very chewy, yet they don’t stick to your teeth.

Another great thing about shockers is that they package is a long tube that you just unwrap and pop in whatever flavor comes out. I kind of find it suspenseful, because I never know which is going to be the last flavor. Hopefully it will end up being green apple because that is my favorite. I personally think it is the sourest one and I love how it just holds the sour flavor longer than the others.

“Every flavor is super sour, but still different, and that’s what makes shockers my favorite candy,” says Whitney a sour candy connoisseur. Indeed all the flavors are uniquely wonderful. Orange has just this citric taste that makes my mouth tingle with joy. Cherry may not taste exactly like a cherry, but it sure does burst in my mouth. Blue raspberry has this way of just melting into the sweet candy, and eventually melting away. Grape is unfortunately kind of rare in some rolls making it a bit more enjoyable to eat. Green apple is tremendously sour and I just love that. Luckily for me that was the last one!

Candy Lipstick

Lipstick is a main part of many women’s lives because it is usually in most of their morning routines. Unfortunately it tastes awful and will keep you from licking your lips throughout the day. That’s certainly not the case for the yummy Candy Lipstick. This candy is known as another original, manufactured by Ce De Candy. It tastes wonderful and will make you lick your lips.

This candy comes in this cute little tube that’s small enough for a little girl to carry around in her pocket or purse.  It’s also easy to save, just incase you don’t finish it in one sitting.  The two most popular flavors are the cherry and strawberry, which is no surprise because they are the ones that most look like lipstick.

“It’s really tasty and makes me feel very womanly,” says Jesse a little girl that loves the candy. Ce De Candy manages to take a daily thing and turn it into a sweet candy that everyone can enjoy. The cherry flavor is just a bit sour, but not too much, while the strawberry is just remarkably sweet.

Candy Lipstick is with out a doubt a very interesting candy that comes in many assorted flavors, but the best and most popular are the ones that seem most real, red and pink. It becomes, for some girls a daily routine, after lunch that is.

Fun Dip (Lik M Aid)

Fun Dip

Fun Dip is one of my favorite candies because it has three different, wonderful flavors all in one candy. If you want a different taste then you can just open up another flavor without having to buy a completely new candy. Unlike many other candies, Fun Dip also has a candy stick that not only allows for easier candy-eating abilities, but is edible too. Although there are only two sticks per package of Fun Dip, they last long enough to even eat six dips! If for some reason you do not have a stick you could always use your finger, which, for a kid, works just as well.

Out of all the three flavors many would say that the Razz Apple Magic Dip is the best because not only does it taste great but the flavor and color changes as you eat it. All the dips have their own unique and excellent taste; the Grape-Yumtious dip is sour enough to please sour-lovers, but not too sour. Cherry-Yum-Diddly dip is for those people with a sweet tooth because it is astonishingly sweet, but not too sweet.

Some would also think that each dip tastes and is exactly the same as one of the Pixy Stix flavors, especially because they are from the same manufacturer as Fun Dip, but in fact they are wrong. In addition to different flavor names, Fun Dip is also grainier than Pixy Stix and it comes with the fabulous candy sticks. The packaging is also amazing because it makes it easier to eat with the stick. Overall Fun Dip is easy to eat, unique, and great tasting.
