Snickers Cruncher

I must say that I was somewhat skeptical about trying this new Snickers Cruncher (it’s not really new, but it’s new to me). Seeing as I’m not a big fan of Snickers in general (I’m not a big fan of peanuts or caramel) you can understand my uncertainty. But as soon as I took my first bite, I found myself quickly taking another… and another… and another… Before I knew it, I was down to my last two bites. This incredibly interesting creation has grabbed my attention. Allow me to break it down for you.

The inside contains a most satisfying mixture of crispy rice, not-too-chewy caramel (it’s a perfect consistency that doesn’t cling to your teeth like other kinds), and crunchy peanut chunks.  Though the taste of the peanuts was very distinct, I can’t quite say there was a plethora of peanuts. This is great for me, since I don’t exactly fall head-over-heels for peanut anything; so for all you peanut lovers (I know you’re out there somewhere), your best bet is to stick to the regular Snickers bar.

Alas, don’t turn your back on the Cruncher yet! One thing that really caught my attention about the Cruncher is the texture and consistency of the caramel that holds together the two stars of the show—I’ve gotta give credit to the supporting actor! Because what’s a Snickers without its caramel? The caramel is smooth and creamy, but not so sticky that when you take a bite, the caramel sticks to your teeth (or your dentures). Then there is the chocolate that’s signature of Mars candy bars.

Snickers is currently celebrating over “75 years of Hunger Satisfaction,?? according to their website. And I must say, it’s about time they changed up the recipe. Its new-found crunchiness adds a fresh new twist to the age-old original, and it brings the Snickers name into the picture for the not-quite peanut lovers, like me. By the way, did you know that every day, over 99 tons of roasted peanuts go into making Snickers bars, and each bar contains approximately 16 peanuts!  (www.candydirect.com)

Lindor Truffles

If Heaven came down to earth in the form of a candy, it would be called the Lindor Truffle. Every little bit of this treat is pleasing to the taste buds. Rolled up in a round ball of chocolaty goodness, Lindor Truffles may very well be the best ball of milk chocolate ever made. Once you put the ball in you mouth, you are introduced to a taste that is unequaled by any other candy. First, there is a thick chocolate coating that your teeth have to bust through before you can get to the other piece of goodness. The outer shell is almost as good as what’s inside, which is a delicious glob of creamy nougat.

I know…sounds awesome, right?

But it’s even better than it sounds. The nougat is chocolate, too. This candy is just chock-full of chocolate that you won’t be able to resist after you eat one. Even if you’ve never had one, the candy will call your name if you’re just looking at it in the store. What chocolate lover can resist something called a “chocolate truffle??? Those two words together are like music to any desert-lover’s ears. The buttery texture of the truffle awaiting on the inside makes you want to eat the whole box. Because of the amount of sugar and calories in each Lindor Truffle, these are treats that are best left for a “once in a while?? desert. Maybe you can use them as a means of celebration or reward. But with their awesome taste, you will want to celebrate and reward yourself as often as you can. The packaging of each individual treat lends itself to a gift-like desert. The shiny foil wrapped around the spherical candy is fun to unwrap which only makes it harder to resist. Once a Lindor Truffle is in your hand, it is futile to even try to resist its temptations.

Chocolate truffles are a favorite desert treat all over the world and have been since their creation in the 1980s. Each culture has a different way that they prepare truffles, but one thing is consistent among the cultural creations – creamy goodness. You will not be disappointed with Lindt’s variation, either. The company produces several different flavors for their chocolates and truffles, including dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate, hazelnut, and so on.

Annabelle’s Rocky Road

I bit into this piece of candy not knowing what to expect. I’d never heard of the Annabelle’s candy company before trying their most popular Rocky Road variety. I was hesitant about the first bite because I’m not a big fan of marshmallow, which is what the center is entirely made of. But I was pleasantly surprised. Annabelle’s Rocky Road is a chocolate covered marshmallow treat with cashews on the inside, although I didn’t notice any in my piece. That’s just as well, though, because the minty green marshmallow was enough to get me hooked. There’s just something about the combination of chocolate, mint and marshmallow that I couldn’t resist. It was a very soft chew which is something that I’m always looking for with my candy. I don’t really like crunchy treats or candy that crunches too much, so the marshmallow was just an added bonus to the minty chocolate taste. And with only 45 calories and 2 grams of fat per piece, I think I’m going to the store today to buy a few more.

After eating this, I wanted to find out more about the company to see what other treats they make. The Annabelle Candy Company has actually been around for a long time. A Russian immigrant who wanted to make some of the best candy that the country had seen started it. The company took off in 1950 from San Francisco and was named after the immigrant’s daughter, Annabelle. When he died in 1971, the control of the company was to Annabelle. Currently, her children run the company and it is one of the largest independently owned candy manufacturers in the country.

What’s even better than that? The candy made by Annabelle’s Candy Company continues to be made by hand. What company still does that? You can be sure that your Annabelle’s candy is made with quality products and each piece is handled carefully. It’s almost like each piece was created just for you. Since the company’s beginning, they have also added other flavors and creations, all involving the best chocolate products and treats that are sure to please any candy-lover’s taste buds.

Toblerone

I have seen these oddly-shaped packages in the stores, but I never thought about trying one. One of the allures of a Toblerone, though, is the packaging. Instead of a traditional candy bar wrapper, Toblerones come in long, slender triangular cardboard package. It definitely stands out from the candies surrounding it on the shelf. Even more, the lettering on the box is raised. If you run your finger across it, you can feel the letters that spell out “Toblerone.??? The color scheme is also interesting. A yellow box with maroon lettering immediately draws your attention away from the normal candy bars around it. The quality of the packaging is indicative of what you will find inside. I opened one end and pulled the candy bar out, which was wrapped in typical candy bar foil for freshness and quality. The actual candy bar is made up of little chocolate triangles that are held together by a strip of chocolate which seems to replicate the mountain scenery of the Switzerland mountain ranges. Part of the fun of eating a Toblerone is that you can break off a triangle at a time to eat it.

The taste of Toblerones is as high of a quality as you would expect from candy made in Switzerland. First, the chocolate is tasty. It’s got a different taste than the normal chocolate candy bars that I am used to eating. It could be because of the honey and almonds on the inside. I like the combination of chocolate and almonds, so this was a pleasant surprise. I normally don’t like to read the ingredients before trying a new candy so I can be hit with the flavor without expectations. But I can safely say the Toblerone greatly exceeded what I expected with the honey and nougat mixed into the chocolate pieces. The almonds and honey are not overwhelming, leaving the chocolate to be the main focus.

Since Toblerones are made in Switzerland with Swiss milk chocolate, you can be sure that each candy bar is made with the best quality products available. According to their website, they are made with the best of ingredients that are imported from all over the world.

Hershey’s Raspberries ‘N’ Creme

You know the name. You have come to depend on its power. On its ability to make you weak in the knees. It has dominated the chocolate confection world for decades. It’s the raw power that can move mountains and stop wars. To make the angels in heaven stop in their tracks. It was the gift from the divine powers above to the little creatures that inhabit this planet. This could only be one thing. It is, Hershey! Hershey has been around longer than any other candy manufacturing name in the world. It has outlasted every other competitor and struck them down with a mighty blow! It has given you the milk chocolate collaborations that take everything the past had to offer and thrown it in the idea machine and come out with some of the most amazing candy bars we as miniscule consumers have used in our every holiday from new years to Christmas. It is in every store in every shop in every home in the world. This is the magnitude of the name Hershey. It has stamped it’s name in the history books and refuses to stop giving us new ideas and creations.

For example here is the  Hershey’s Raspberries ‘N’ Crème. Not only do you have the rich milk chocolate perfected over the decades of practice, but you’ve have got their white chocolate (which is perfection to say the least. I am more of a white chocolate person anyway so this is two times the treat) and they have mixed it with raspberries. Now these are not artificial raspberries, this contains “real raspberry fruit bits??? and they are not joking when they say this. I have had to pick out a couple of raspberries out of my teeth, only to put it back in my mouth. I know it’s gross, but I love it. I love every creation Hershey has to offer to us. They are my favorite, hands down, the best chocolate candy bar manufacturing company in the world. All hail the greatness of Hershey! I am not worthy of your awesome power. I have already consumed the entire Hershey’s Raspberries ‘N’ Crème bar that I opened before writing this blog about it. I couldn’t help it, and the bad part is I WANT MORE! I could eat more. But I don’t know if it’s smart. You see what it does to me, I’m going crazy!

Milk Duds

Milk Duds have been around since 1928. The candy got the silly name because the original idea was to have perfectly round milk chocolate covered caramel pieces. Soon realizing that this was impossible, the confectionery company began calling the project a “dud???. The little caramel candies were soon eaten by employees, relatives and friends and jokingly they would say that these were the best “duds??? they’d ever had. It caught on and before they knew it, “Milk Duds??? were flying off the candy store shelves. They are also called “milk??? duds due to the large amount of milk used to make both the caramel and chocolate portions of the candy.

Duds or not, these little babies are tasty! I love the combination of caramel and chocolate and the makers of Milk Duds have perfected it. They still use a similar version of the original recipe, too, which calls for lots of fresh milk, sugar and the best milk chocolate. This is another nostalgic candy that will probably outlive me and outside of new recipes for improving freshness and shelf-life, I’m happy that they have not altered the recipe I have come to know and love since childhood. Milk Duds are a chewy, creamy, chocolaty treat that are fun to suck on and chew. They were said to pull out fillings if you are not careful, but personally, I think that is an old wives’ tale. Plus, I don’t have any fillings, so I’m not concerned! Milk Duds are a simple, classic candy that will never go out of style – combining two great flavors, the sweetness of the chocolate mixed with the smooth, creamy caramel, make for a taste sensation. I’ll eat these little “duds??? anyday!

Abba Zaba Sour Apple

Sam Altshuler, a Russian immigrant founded Annabelle Candy Company, Incorporated, in 1950. Mr. Altshuler learned the art of candy making, and after struggling for years, finally achieved success with the Rocky Road candy bar. He named his business the “Annabelle Candy Company??? after his daughter, and began manufacturing Rocky Road in San Francisco. The item quickly gained popularity throughout the western United States where it has its strongest hold today. In 1965, Annabelle Candy Company moved across the San Francisco bay to its present location in Hayward, California. Mr. Altshuler passed away in 1971, leaving control of the Company to his daughter, Annabelle Altshuler Block. Annabelle purchased two other candy companies after her father’s death, one of which produced the Abba Zaba bar. The candy company continued to grow and has remained a family business through the years. It is the largest independently owned candy bar manufacturer in the United States and the Abba Zaba bar remains one of its biggest sellers.

Whew! That was a mouthful. You know what else is a mouthful? If you guessed the Abba Zaba you are correct! Abba Zaba’s are chewy taffy-y goodness with an ooey, gooey peanut butter-y center. They are sticky, messy and a great treat. The kind folks over at the Annabelle Candy Company have come up with a brand new Abba Zaba flavor – the Apple Abba Zaba. And this, candy kids, is the candy blog du jour. The wrapper of this new and intriguing bar looks just like the old wrapper with one exception – it is bright green. Upon opening the candy, I come face to face with a green taffy candy. Shockingly green! Day-glow green! It looks like it is the same consistency of the old Abba Zaba and when I give it a little tug it has that same taffy-pull feel to it. It smells great, but then again, I am a sucker for sour apple flavored things. Ok, let me bite off a corner. Hmmm…it tastes like sour apple salt water taffy. But I didn’t quite make it to the famous peanut butter center. Let’s try that again. Oophnfg. Mymoufisrweallyfullnow. Hold on one second, please. Ok. Got some water…that’s better. So, it’s basically sour apple taffy with a sweet and salty peanut butter center. The taste is, well, to tell you the truth, it’s not my favorite candy so far. Maybe sweet apple taffy would have been better. Or even sour apple taffy with a caramel center. But the taste of peanut butter and sour apple taffy just isn’t doing it for me. The sweet-saltiness of the peanut butter and the sour, tangy green apple test just don’t blend well. But hey, what do I know? Give this candy a shot and let me know what you think. Maybe I’ll write a letter to the Annabelle candy company with our suggestions. Until then, au revoir candy kids…

Charleston Chew Vanilla

Charleston who?  Charleston Chew!  Named after that silly dance craze back in the twenties, you may not have heard of these babies unless your parents or grandparents introduced them to you when you were young.  As for me, it wasn’t too long ago that I first tried my first Charleston (a tragedy, I know).  But thank Zeus for that day!  Charleston Chews have been around since 1922, and their unique texture and consistency is sure to keep them around for decades.  However, it wasn’t until 1998 that Tootsie Roll brought us the mini Charleston Chew—a most fortunate occurrence for the skeptics.  Original Charleston Chew bars can be somewhat big and intimidating for a first-timer, but the minis are a perfect bite-sized taste of the original.  If you like to moderate your sugar intake (which I definitely don’t), the minis allow you to enjoy these bars of bliss without having to leave two thirds of the bar lying around, only to get stale and icky.

For my first Charleston Chew, I had a mini.  The only downside I can see to these is that the nougat tends to stick to your teeth like rubber cement!  (An up-side, of course, only if you’re a dentist.)  However, for my second Charleston Chew I was instructed to put it in the freezer for about an hour, and then take a bite.  Boy, what a difference!  After putting one in the freezer for a while, the nougat hardens up just enough to NOT stick to your pearly-whites.  Instead, the chocolate quickly melts and the nougat breaks up into smaller, less-chewy pieces, allowing you to swallow the pieces before they take a toll on your molars.  These nostalgic chocolate-covered nougat bars come in vanilla (my favorite), strawberry, and chocolate.  I strongly recommend you try freezing the vanilla-flavored ones if it’s your first time.  You won’t regret it!

Starburst

Starbursts first exploded onto the candy scene in 1976. Then, the square/tube package featured lemon, lime, strawberry, orange and lemon, while today’s package features lemon, cherry, orange and strawberry. Starbursts have real fruit flavor and a healthy dose of vitamin C in each tasty little square, something that few other fruit chews can boast – this and the fact that they are so delicious help attribute to the fact that they are America’s top selling fruit chew!

I love Starbursts. When I was young, my Grandmother kept them around for me and my 500 cousins. We loved them, but we especially loved what she did with the wrappers. We’d tear into our candies, lickety split and hand the wrappers over to her. Once she was done making a few twists and turns with her fingers she handed back mini captains hats to us. We’d put them on our fingertips and draw faces on the pads of our fingers. Instant finger puppets! I will never forget that. Starbursts are fruity, juicy little candies that make my mouth water long after I’ve eaten them. Strawberry and cherry are my favorite flavors, although lemon and orange are pretty tasty, too. They each have a sweet, pleasant flavor with just a hint of tartness – almost like you would have if you were eating the actual fruit. Starbursts are chewy, but not rough on your teeth. You’ll definitely need a good brushing after eating them, but it’s so worth it!

Riesen

You don’t need a reason to take a time out during the day to enjoy the chocolate and toffee goodness that is a Riesen. These delicious pieces of evil arrive in a dark seductive and sultry wrapping, which immediately indicates that the contents are wicked, and indeed they are. From what I hear these little toffees can be rather expensive in the stores, but for me the indulgence would be worth it since I do believe they are one of the best toffees around. On opening the wrapper you can smell the darkness, the bitterness and the immaculateness of these small but perfect toffees. They are roughly one-inch square and a little more than 1/2 inch high with a glistening darkness that invites you to partake of this wonderful treat. The toffee itself is initially quite hard and protected by a thin but enticing layer of dark chocolate. Once the chew is initiated the toffee becomes much softer and the true taste seeps slowly out and jiggles your taste buds into immediate action.

The stimulation here is somewhat strange since the taste buds are usually still coated by the chocolate that for some reason takes longer to melt. The toffee is smooth and quite creamy and when intermingled with the dark mysterious covering becomes an absolute joy. Each toffee is wrapped in a deceivingly simple brown wrapper masking what is one of the most fantastic chocolate toffees out there on the market today. Be careful though, once you eat a Riesen all other candy may cease to exist to you and seem bland, tasteless and unappealing. If I had my way I would gather several dozen Reisen together to create a mutant super Reisen and horde it away from others where I could be alone with it, and tenderly stroke it to show how much I cared for it. My preciooouussssssss………..
