Smint White Fresh Mint

Okay, I have a bone to pick with the makers of Smint mints. The unique packaging of these mints has, at very key moments, prevented me from accessing that much needed freshness. Because you can’t see the inside of the container without destroying it (which I’ve never had the urge to do), one can only assume that each individual mint must pass through some complex maze to escape the container and be released into the hand of some willing consumer. A special Tic Tac–sized box asks that the owner press down on the container’s top to release a mint from the bottom corner. The design is clever indeed, but not always effective. If the mints get lodged just above the magic trap, you’ll find yourself hurriedly shaking the entire box of mints in public while strangers give you looks of shame for buying such a loud, dysfunctional container of breath mints.

Smint mints are fine, in and of themselves. And the natural whitening power of White Fresh Mint by Smint is very appealing. They are said to have Papaine, a natural enzyme that works to whiten the teeth. Whether it is effective or not in mint form, who doesn’t want whiter teeth? The prospect of such is well worth looking past the box’s faults. Flip the package to the back side, and you’ll see something else to make you smile. A red symbol featuring a smiling tooth under an umbrella reads “Tooth Friendly Tested.??? This means that the product has been independently tested and was proven safe for use on your pearly whites. It’s true what your great grandma always said through her slipping dentures: “You only get one pair.??? Do something nice for your teeth—even if it’s eating candy that whitens them—and you’ll feel as happy as that little smiling red tooth looks. Another fun bonus regarding these mints is their triangular shape. Each one is imprinted with a giant “S??? that makes the mints resemble Superman’s chest. Don’t let that fool you into thinking that this mint will blow you away with its power. It is actually on the milder side of the spectrum, so you’ll enjoy these if you frequent Tic Tacs.

Ragold Mints

The Ragold Spearmint line of breath freshening candy is a tasty addition to the many varieties of existing breath mints on the market. These all-natural candies take the form of little white tablets that could be mistaken for large pills if you didn’t know any better. Nevertheless, these breath mint candies are highly refreshing and give your mouth a tingly feeling that alerts you about its breath freshening qualities. Unlike other brands of mints, the Ragold Spearmint pieces are a solid white mint that carries all the same qualities of the more popular brand mints with the kick of an extra minty flavor.

The handy little tin box that the Ragold Spearmint candies come in add to its already appealing allure. The landscape pictured on the front of the tin is a natural scenery of green trees surrounding a white sailboat in the middle of a clear pond. Before even opening the tin, you can be certain that the picture is indicative of refreshing feeling that awaits you on the inside. Once you take the mint out of the box and place it on your tongue, you immediately feel a cool sense of refreshment. Once the mint is partially dissolved in your mouth, you can easily crunch it up and chew it to give you an extra burst of minty freshness. With more than 40 individual mints in each tin, you can be sure to enjoy these throughout the entire week as needed.

The Ragold Confectionary Company is an offshoot from the parent German company and has been marketing mints and other candy products in the United States for the last three decades. You might recognize their Velamints mint products as being one of their most popular and recognizable products and was a leading pioneer in the sugar-free breath mint industry. The parent company began in the late 1880s in Germany, but they have distributing and manufacturing locations throughout the United States with their main headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

In addition to the refreshing nature and convenient packaging of the Ragold Spearmint candies, the ingredients contained in the mints are accommodating for everybody. In addition to being all natural, the mints are also free of gluten and artificial sweeteners. Their motto – “To your health – in good taste??? – is printed on the bottom of then tin and they seem to strive to meet that goal in each mint. As a matter of fact, when looking over the list of ingredients, you will only find three things contained in each mint – sorbitol, natural flavors, and magnesium stearate. Others will appreciate the fact that the Ragold Spearmint brand of breath mints is also kosher to accommodate religious and health requirements.

Andes Chocolate

The Andes chocolate pieces are small little rectangular chunks of chocolate that are wrapped in a colorful piece of foil. They usually come in a pack and the individual pieces are easy to unwrap so you can get right to them with the least amount of frustration and hesitation. But don’t let their small size fool you. The Andes chocolates pack a punch of mint chocolate taste that you won’t be able to resist. The fact that they are small and bite-size only makes it harder to resist their scrumptious taste. I enjoy savoring the small pieces of chocolate by making then into three smaller bites rather than letting the taste go away so quickly.

Andes chocolate pieces have a rich chocolate taste and a smooth texture that makes your tongue savor the experience. One of the things I liked about these chocolate pieces was that it didn’t get stuck in my teeth like many chocolates tend to do. It chews up smoothly and goes down smoothly while having a sweet chocolate mint taste the entire time. Although it looks like one solid piece of chocolate, the Andes pieces are generally a sandwich of two thin pieces of mint-flavored chocolate with an even thinner piece of mint in between.

The Andes Candies Company began in 1921 as a manufacturer of simple chocolate mints and candies for consumers. Since then, the Andes pieces of chocolate that we are familiar with has become the leading after-dinner mint in the world. They are offered in many of the more exclusive and prestigious restaurants as well as family restaurants with more moderately-priced menus. Andes chocolate mints are a refreshing conclusion to any meal or just an everyday treat. In 2000, the company was purchased and is currently a subsidiary of the Tootsie Roll Industries, which distributes many popular candies across North America. These chocolates have come a long way since their beginning over 80 years ago. Other than the plain chocolate mint flavor that they began with, they now have a variety of choices to fit the taste buds of any consumer. Some of the regular flavors include Cherry Jubilee, Mint Parfait, and Toffee Crunch. The company also offers seasonal flavors for an exciting change of pace, including their Peppermint Crunch flavor that is offered during the winter season. Whatever your preference, the Andes chocolates are certain to make you coming back for more.

BreathSavers Vanilla Mint

Breathsavers are a fun and refreshing way to freshen your breath anytime. With the many different choices on the market, you might not know which one is the best for providing a great taste with a fresh breath. The Hershey’s brand of Breathsavers is one of the better ones available for consumers. You can even be assured by its ability to satisfy because it has the name Hershey behind it, which is one of the most successful candy producing companies in North America. While Breathsavers are not chocolate, the Hershey’s company has been able to transfer their knowledge of chocolate candy products to the breath mint arena with a great deal of success.

The Vanilla Mint Breathsavers have a refreshing minty taste that lets you know it’s working on making your breath fresh while still having a candy-like vanilla taste. You know that it is working because if you let the Breathsaver sit on the tip of your tongue, you will feel a slight tingle from the middle of the minty center. Take a deep breath and you will undoubtedly feel the coolness that the vanilla mint creates within your mouth. This long-lasting candy also seems to have a clearing effect on your sinuses, making it a great treat during the cold winter months. For an even greater experience of the minty freshness, chew on your Vanilla Mint Breathsaver when it is about halfway dissolved to let out the Neutrazin contained within the little piece of candy.

Hershey’s Breathsavers are not only a great tasting candy that freshens your breath, but it’s also not bad for you. For one thing, they are sugar-free so everybody can be sure to enjoy them without guilt. They come in an attractive and eye-catching foil wrapping with 12 in a pack, making them easy and convenient to carry around with you all day either in you purse or your front pocket. Vanilla Mint is one of their popular flavors, but there are several others flavors to satisfy anybody’s tastes. Their first flavor was Peppermint when the line was introduced by the Life Savers Company in 1978. Since then, the Breathsavers line of candies was acquired by the Hershey Company in 2000 and more flavors were quickly introduced. You can choose from flavors like Wintergreen, Citrus Mist, Peppermint, and Spearmint. Hershey’s has also released a special pack of Breathsavers that are longer-lasting, up to three hours. For those special packs, you can choose between Peppermint and Spearmint flavors.

Lifesavers Sweet Mint Candies

Life Savers candy was first created in 1912 by Clarence Crane, a Cleveland chocolatier. At the time, he was looking for a new “summer candy” to supplement his chocolate business, which slumped in hot weather. Crane developed a line of hard mints, but didn’t have the space or machinery to make them. He contracted with a pill manufacturer to press the mints into shape. The pill manufacturer, whose machinery was malfunctioning, found that the pressing process worked much better when the mints were stamped with a hole in the middle. Crane called the new candy “Crane’s Peppermint Life Savers,” because they looked like miniature throwable life preservers. The ring-shaped devices were just beginning to come into use after the Titanic disaster.

In 1913, Crane sold the formula for his Life Savers candy to Edward Noble for only $2,900. Noble started his own candy company and began producing and selling the mints known as Pep-O-Mint Life Savers. He also began to package the mints into rolls wrapped in tinfoil to prevent them from going stale. This process was done by hand until 1919 when machinery was developed. In 1925, the tinfoil was replaced with the signature aluminum foil we all know today. Noble soon began to create and sell many other flavors including the popular fruit “five flavor??? rolls. Today, Life Savers holds the market for rolled, hard candies. And it’s easy to see why.

Life Savers have always held a special place in my heart. My grandfather, who had as big of a sweet tooth as I do, was a huge fan of Pepp-O-Mint and Five Flavor Life Savers. He always kept a roll on him and was more than happy to share with me and my cousins. My grandmother bought them in bulk, so there were always spare rolls at their house. He would hand us kids each a $5 bill when we came to visit and a roll of Life Savers. We would trade our flavors with one another and use the candy pieces as checkers, sun visors for our pinkies, or pencil toppers. Having grown up eating Life Savers, it’s always exciting to try a new flavor. This new Sweet Mint variety is especially good. The mint flavor is not too overpowering, but instead it is refreshing. The candy has a sugary taste to it – it reminds me of a mint-y icing.  Very flavorful, but understated at the same time. The mints leave your mouth feeling very cool and refreshed. I think this is a great new addition to the Life Saver family. Hopefully it will be around for a long time.

Eclipse Cinnamon Flash Strips

Back in the early 2000’s the world was graced with the invention of “breath strips???. They revolutionized the fresh breath market, in my humble opinion. Packaged and sold in both the gum and oral hygiene aisle of the supermarket, they gave you a feeling that gum did not – though you couldn’t quite put your finger on it. Just why did your mouth feel so great, so fresh after popping a little strip of freshness?  The strip itself looks like colored tape and is brittle if you happen to break it. Once on your tongue, it instantly dissolves into a sticky substance that stains your tongue for a little while, this is the magic though, kids. THIS is when it happens. After opening and closing your mouth a few times, along with a couple of swallows, you find your mouth remarkably cooler, fresher and more pleasant. I found that if you take a sip of cold water immediately after, this effect is heightened and reminds me of mouthwash you can swallow. Thank the gods for such an invention! Or just the good folks at Wrigley’s.

Today I am sampling the Wrigley’s brand Eclipse cinnamon flash strips. So far, I have only had the mint and wintergreen varieties, but I enjoy a cinnamon-y mouth from time to time, so why the heck not? They look like the usual breath strip that we have all come to know and love, except these are a fiery, cinnamon-y red color – perfect for Valentines Day next month. The texture of the strip is the same as the old ones, but how about the taste? Well, let’s give it a whirl. Drumroll, please…

They’re great! The cinnamon flavor is not too strong, but has just the right kick. My mouth is filled with a pleasant sweet-spicy flavor, but not one flavor overshadows the other. My mouth feels a lot fresher and in spite of the cinnamon flavor, has cooled off quite a bit. As usual, taking a sip of water helps to enhance this effect. I definitely give these new breath strips the Sheriff’s badge of approval.

Tic Tac Spearmints

Several years back it was, “Take a Tic Tac!???  Now, it’s the 2-calorie mint!  A story goes that in 1478, Italian explorer Antonio Minteroni first discovered tiny mints being enjoyed by people in Indonesia.  He brought this idea back to Italy, which inspired tiny Tic Tacs.  These delightful and miniscule mints have been around for over 600 years!  (www.tictacUSA.com)

Just kidding!  Tic Tacs first started in 1969 with the original Freshmint flavor.  From then on, Tic Tacs have added many refreshing, sweet, and bold flavors, such as spearmint, orange, cinnamon, and many more.  Though many flavors have been added and others eliminated, the packaging has remained pretty constant.  These one-of-a-kind mints have always been packaged in a signature mini case that rattles in your pockets, alerting everyone of your presence, and of course, Tic Tacs!  One of the older and always loveable flavors is my favorite: SPEARMINT!

Spearmint has always been one of my favorites because it has a very herbal taste, and it reminds me of grandma’s warm, spearmint tea on those cold winter mornings.  These tiny treats are packed with an intense punch of refreshment that’s bound to awaken your entire mouth.  Their spearminty freshness lasts rather long, but with such an intense flavor, it’s sure to leave you asking for more and before you know it, you’ll be poppin’ them in your mouth faster than you can say, “Take a Tic Tac!???  But of course, there’s more!  In addition to their powerful flavor, they’re less than a mere two calories each!  That’s right, all that flavor and all that freshness is packed into less than two calories of cool.  So lets review: what’s my favorite mint that packs the most punch and takes the tiniest toll on my diet?  Why, Tic Tacs Spearmint, of course!

Junior Mints Inside Outs

Yet another twist to the traditional yet oh-so-loveable Junior Mints:  INSIDE OUTS!  The Tootsie Roll Company, which (as you may know) added  Junior Mints to their line a little over a decade ago, and not long ago brought you Junior Caramels, now brings yet another refreshing variation to the timeless classic!  So many companies are switching up their originals: Kit Kat, Reese’s, Snickers, Crunch.  And now Tootsie Roll has jumped on the band wagon by adding a twist to our favorite soft chocolate mints.

Junior Mints Inside Outs still have their signature minty taste, but this time it’s intertwined with a chocolatey inside!  Outside there’s a somewhat hard, white, creamy coating, that’s a bit like white chocolate in consistency, but doesn’t quite taste like white chocolate to me, so I can’t tell you exactly what it.  It’s more of a smooth, creamy candy coating.  But the real surprise is on the inside…  Bite into a mint and you get a cool burst of mint chocolatey flavor distinct from anything I’ve ever tasted.  Regular Junior Mints have a more juicy, white mint cream on the inside, whereas Inside Outs have a more jelly-like mint chocolatey filling.  Now, this “chocolatey??? thing may be throwing you off a bit, but the reason I use “chocolatey??? instead of “chocolate??? is because (sadly) there’s no actual chocolate in these babies…

I know, I know.  Heartbreaking.  Yes.  Though nothing beats the original JM’s, with their PURE chocolate coating, Tootsie Roll has made a great attempt at bringing us a variation of the old.  These limited-edition Inside Outs will not be available for long, so if you’re in love with these babies, stock up and get your feed while you can, because they won’t be available for long!

Ice Breakers Center Gum

I am a gum snob. I only really like to chew sugar free gum but that tends to lose its flavor so quickly, so when I find a gum that I like, I usually stick to it. This new Ice Breakers Center gum is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Each piece is packed with ginseng and antioxidants from Vitamin C which makes me happy because not only am I getting a clean, minty fresh mouth as a result of chewing this gum, but I will be getting a good dose of vitamins as well. Now how many of you can say your gum can do all of that? Hmmm?

The gum is packaged in a small, rectangular box that and each piece is round and green. The gum has a hard-ish “sugar??? shell (remember kids, this gum is sugar free) that is packed with the signature Ice Breakers “flavor crystals??? while the inside is a soft gum product. Once you start chewing, you realize that flavor is the key here. And this flavor is not stopping. I have been chewing this piece of gum for almost an hour and the flavor just won’t quit. My mouth feels cool and refreshed and because the gum is sugar free, I don’t feel the least bit guilty.

This gum is nice and chewy and doesn’t dissolve easily which gets a major thumbs-up from me. There is nothing worse than gum that easily dissolves and gets stuck in your teeth and lips. You will not find that here, thank goodness! So far the gum has kept its chewy consistency and again, the flavor just lasts and lasts. Without turning into Violet Beauregard from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (champion gum chewer) I think it’d be safe to say that this gum would last quite a long time. So if you’re looking for a new, cool mint gum, I advise you to try the new Ice breakers “Center??? Gum.
